County Veterans Report - 02 March 2009

Saturday Morning - Middx 0 Yorks 10

A disastrous start with no-one playing very well against a strong Yorkshire team. As we automatically started with a 0-3 deficit & then lost the first 3 Mens singles, we were quickly in a position of not being able to get anything out of the match & all motivation disappeared.

Saturday Afternoon - Middx 6 Cheshire 4

This was a great win! To win all six Mens singles against Cheshire was an unbelievable result. Both Jimmy Walsh & Razul Farhat had fantastic wins over Brian Johns. This win gave us a fighting chance as we now had one more point than Cheshire and were level with Leicester.

Sunday Morning - Middx 4 Surrey 6

A point from this match would guarantee staying up so we needed to win 5 out of the seven Mens games against a solid Surrey team - a big task. If Cheshire failed to get a draw in their match, we would stay up!

A good start when Raz beat the Surrey #1, Ian Girdler & Jimmy beat Dave Harding but Chris lost to Simon Philipz, to make it 2-4 after the first round of singles. A good double win for Jim & Chris gave us some hope at 3-4 but we could only manage 1 further singles win by Jimmy over Ian Girdler.

This meant relying on the result in the other match. Unfortunately Cheshire responded to the situation and managed to get the point they needed. So we went down.

In spite of the fact that we were playing the best county sides in the country, and with the additional handicap of being without a lady, we were relegated by the narrowest of margins & the players at Halifax truly did Middlesex and themselves proud, both with their skill and the fighting spirit displayed.

Veterans' County Championship Premier Division - 15 November 2008

Report By Chris Pickard

The first weekend of the Veterans' County Championship Premier Division took place at Ashford Table Tennis Club over the weekend of 18th & 19th October 2008.

The standard of table Tennis was extremely high with some of the countries top Veteran players on view. The problem for the spectatator was which table to look at as there were tremendous games going on all over the hall.

Although playing well, the Middlesex team were on the wrong end of some very close games on the first day, espescially against Kent where the luck just seemed to go to the opponents on most of the vital points in virtually all the games and what could have easily been a win turned out to be a 7-3 loss. A singles win each for Jimmy Walsh & Razul Farhat against Mark Romano plus a Mixed Doubles win for Gillian Lesh/Chris Pickard was rough justice in a very close match.

The second match was a tough one against former champions, and one of the favourites for this years title, Sussex. Sally Raymond was deputising for Gill Lesh and Chris Pickard came in while Razul had his afternoon siesta. Again there were some tremendous games but Sussex were just that bit stronger and were worthy 7-3 winners. Jimmy Walsh & Chris Pickard had good singles wins against Peter Bartram, with Jimmy & Costas having a great Mens' Doubles win.

The final match on Sunday morning against another former title winning side, Leicestershire, saw the  men in sizzling form and the luck that deserted us on the first day seemed to be with us this time. Costas, Jimmy & Razul were very impressive in winning all their Mens Singles to give us a deserved 6-4 win. This now gives us a fighting chance of avoiding relegation when the second weekend takes place in February, a loss would have meant almost certain relegation. A great result in a pressure situation!

Ho Ho for Middlesex Cadets - 07 March 2008

Ping and Tin-Tin Star as Middlesex Cadets take County Premier Division.

Middlesex continued their splendid season of success with young players as, following on from the success of their Juniors gaining promotion to next season's premier division, the Middlesex Cadets served their county proud as they swept all before them and won the County Championships Cadets Premier Division played at Draycott and Long Eaton TTC over the weekend.
Middlesex were the dominant team over the weekend and showed their intention right from the start when in the first match they overwhelmed last season’s runners up Yorkshire, 9-1, this set the tone for the weekend.
Their six player squad of Ping Ho, Connor Neenan, Eden Fung, Damilola Thomas, Sushmita Limbu and Tin-Tin Ho, won seven straight matches and took the title by three points from runners-up Warwickshire, and from early on during the second day Middlesex had sewn up the title and the real interest and excitement was who would finish runners-up.

Going into the final round of matches any one of three counties could have finished second, with Warwickshire, South Yorkshire and Sussex all in with a realistic chance, and it was in the very last set of the weekend that Matthew Outhwaite of Warwickshire scored a thrilling five game victory over South Yorkshire’s Scott Hollowood, thus giving the Midlanders a vital point and the crucial runners-up spot.
Ping Ho was the star performer for Middlesex, with an unbeaten record of 12 wins, and only a slightly better average than his sister Tin Tin, who dropped only one win from her 12 starts.
Sadly we say goodbye to Lincolnshire and Cleveland who finished in the bottom two positions, and will next season start in the lower tier in an attempt to regain their premier status.
